The St. Louis metropolitan region contains a vibrant and energetic college student population. With almost 10% of its population enrolled in an institution of higher education, St. Louis has a plethora of institutions of higher learning. It is home to the prestigious WashingtonUniversity, an internationally recognized private research university ranked 11th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. The oldest university west of the Mississippi River, Saint LouisUniversity, was found there in 1818. The oldest college in Illinois, McKendreeCollege, in Lebanon, is also in theSt. Louis metropolitan region just 25 miles from downtown St. Louis.
